Palakkad - The Tourist's Paradise
Christened "The Gateway" to "God's Own Country", Palakkad offers the perfect setting to make your getaway unforgettable. From historical monuments to wildlife sanctuaries to tropical forests, Palakkad has got it all. Some of the major tourist attractions are:
Palakkad Fort
Built by Hyder Ali of Mysore in 1766, the old granite fort situated in the heart of Palakkad town is one of the best preserved in Kerala. Also known as Tipu's fort it is now preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Malampuzha Garden
This famous picninc spot which comprises a dam, beautifully landscpaed gardens, is situated on the lower hills of the Western Ghats. The garden has lush green lawns, well laid out flower beds, cool pools, fountains and pathways. the reservoir offers boating and fishing facilities. The passenger ropeway is the first of its kind in South India.

Fantasy Park
The park is located in the enchanting backdop of the mountain ranges of Malampuzha with the majestic mountain peaks of the Western Ghats overlooking it.

Kollengode
Kollengode enshrines the pristine beauty of rural Palakkad. The Kollengode Palace built in the traditional architectural style and a shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu are the major attractions here.

Attappady
Attappady is one of the largest tribal settlements of rural Palakkad. The grandiloquence of this great symphony of forests, rivers and mountains is awe inspiring


Silent Valley National Park

Rare birds, deer and tiger dwell in this sprawling habitat of endangered virgin tropical forests. perhaps, nowhere else can one also find such a representative collection of peninsular mammals, over a 100 species of butterflies and 400 species of moths and other fauna like the Ceylon Frog Moth, Great Indian Hornbill, the Nilgiri Laughing Thrush and the Lion Tailed Macaque.

Nelliyampathy
From the town of Nenmara in Palakkad district, the cloud-caressed peaks of the majestic Nelliyampathy hill ranges are a sight to behold. The Pothundy Dam is a picteresque locale with facilities for boating and a nice option as a picnic place.

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary
Offers an exotic experience of the rare fauna of Kerala including bonnet macaques, Nilgiri Langurs, lion tailed macaques, tigers, spectacled cobras, kraits, vipers, turtles, darters, little cormorants and black eagles.

Lakkidi
Kunchan Smarakam, the memorial to poet Kunchan Nambiar, the inventor of Thullal (a satirical art form) is the main attraction.

Jain Temple of Jainimedu
This historic 32 feet long, 20 feet wide granite temple displays images of the Jian Thirthankaras and Yakshinis. The region around the temple, known as Jainimedu, is one of the few places in Kerala where the vestiges of Jainism have survived.

Kanjikode
One of the major industrial belts in Kerala. The excellent infrastructural facilities have lured many industrial ginats to Kanjikode. The Department of Industries and Commerce has iidentified the Kanjikode belt as an area for development.

Mayiladumpara
Cholanoor Peacock Sanctuary is renowned as a place teeming with peacocks.

Thiruvalathoor
A 10 Km drive from Palakkad, Thiruvalathoor is an ancient temple with some wood carvings and stone sculptures.

Siruvani
A dam is constructed accross the river Siruvani and the water stored is diverted for providing drinking water to Coimbatore city.

Meenvallam
The little known waterfalls at Meenvallam is a combination of enchanting beauty and sceninc splendour. The water falls from nearly 20 to 25 feet and the depth is around 15 to 20 feet. A mini-hydel project is also being implemented here.

Punarjani Guha
Situated 2 Km from the Thiruvalwamala temple, the Punarjani Guha is a natural tunnel in the rocky cliff. Lord Sriraman is the temple's chief deity and the idol is believed to be "swayambhoo" that is born on its own.

Chittur Gurumadam
It is on the banks of the River Sokanasini (the destroyer of sorrows) Thunchath Ezhuthachan, the author of 'Adhyatma Ramayana' spent his last days here.

FESTIVALS AND FOLK ARTS

Kalpathy Ratholsavam
kalpathy is one of the ancient Brahmin Agraharams in Kerala and is located in the heart of the town. The government announced this a heritage village. The annual festival at Viswanatha temple, Kalpathy is held during the middle of November.

Nenmara Vallengui Vela
The annual festival at Nellikulangara Bhagavathy Temple near Nenmara is celebrated on the Pooram Day of Malayalam month Meenam (Feb/March) every year. A fine display of fireworks is displayed during the festival.

Konganpada at Chittur
This festival is celebrated on the Monday after the new moon in Kumbham (Feb/March) every year. This is a festival of ritual dramas associated with Chittur Kavu Bhagavathy Temple.

Kannayarkali
The Kannayarkali is an art form exclusive to the Nair community of the district of Palakkad. It is performed in temples as well as other major centres. This is celebrated duirng March-April.

Pavakoothu
Pavakoothu also goes by the name Tholppavakkoothu. This shadow play procliams Palakkad's to Kambha Ramayana and Tamil literary culture.
